A Rare And Unique Japanese Percussion Cannon (tanegashima) With Sear Bar Trigger Mechanism Circa 1845.

29 inch octagonal barrel with swelled cannon muzzle. 70 caliber. Steel front and rear sight. Large back action lock with French style military percussion hammer.

This unique cannon has a long steel sear bar rather than the traditional Japanese ball trigger. We have never seen this mechanism in any of the hundreds of Japanese matchlocks and percussion guns it has been our pleasure to sell. This trigger mechanism is common on 17th century German military matchlock guns.

Beautifully age patinated Japanese red oak fullstock with outstanding grain patterns. Wood is in pristine condition.Thi rarity even retains its original wooden ramrod. Steel surfaces are lightly rust patinated but generally very good. Bore is fine. Action is good but has difficulty holding on full cock. Half cock is fine. 41 inches overall and weighing just over a chunky 12 pounds this is a very good example of a Japanese percussion cannon.

Barrel not dismounted to see if it is signed. That would be a bonus from the fortunate buyer.
