A Scarce And Desirable First Model Maynard Percussion Single Shot Breechloading Civil War Carbine.

20 inch round barrel. .35 caliber. First Model carbines were purchased by Southern States just prior to the outbreak of war. Mississippi brought 300 in .35 caliber and Florida purchased 1000 in .35 caliber.

This First Model is in very good overall condition with large “PPP” stamped on the right side of the breech. The barrel is mostly smooth brown patina with traces of blue. The frame is crisp with crisp markings and even a good hint of casehardening The walnut stock with considerable “alligatored” original varnish and a number of minor dents. Patchbox contains a number of ancient percussion caps.

Long adjustable rear sight. Action is crisp and bore is good. Designed by dentist, Dr. Edward Maynard, inventor of the tape priming system that bears his name, First Model Maynard carbines are desirable and sought after as a considerable number were purchased by Southern States and used by Confederate cavalry in the Civil War. Matching serial number 3985 on tape primer door and under barrel.  Prime Confederate serial number range.

This is a good, complete, full dimension example.
