An Impressive Scottish Baskethilt Broadsword Circa 1770.

The broad 35 and 1/2 inch unusual diamond shaped blade is 1 and 1/4 inches wide at forte. Deeply struck letters on right flat “FORTIA” meaning ‘strong or brave”. The blade is in very good condition with attractive age patina and no corrosion.

Classic heavy Scottish basket, well pierced and beautifully filed edges, a hilt that exemplifies quality and excellence of design. Leather wrapped wood grip in good condition with expected age flaking. Heavy low domed pommel.

This fine blade even retains some of its original leather hand guard. 42 and 1/2 inches overall. A genuine homogenous Scottish broadsword that has never been dismounted. A far better than usually offered example.
