A Magnificent Factory Panel Scene Engraved Late Production Merwin & Hulbert ‘Pocket Army’ Revolver.
Serial number 4905. 3 and 1/4 inch barrel, 44-40 ("Calibre Winchester 1873" marked on left side of frame).
This is one special revolver. The revolver is profusely engraved throughout with Merwin’s characteristic “punch dot” engraving accented with three leaf foliage. The left side of the frame with a vignette panel depicting three well rendered quail or grouse amid a tuft of tall prairie grass. This engraving is a charming and unique example of 19th century American art. The grips show beautiful mellow patination with minor age cracks and are scrimshawed with “23” and original to this revolver.
Barrel and frame retain 95%+ bright original nickel with some loss on saddle of backstrap. Cylinder with 60% nickel with some darker areas. Bore is good with strong rifling and some ‘frosting’. Action is strong only slightly soft on half cock. The famous Merwin “suction” is still quite powerful;.
Merwins are perhaps the most interesting of all ‘frontier’ big bore revolvers and their scarcity as compared to Colt Single Action Army’s makes a great one like this a collector’s prize.
