An Exceptionally Fine Spanish Cup Hilt Rapier With Chiseled Cup And Superb Blade Signed “JOHANNES WUNDES” Circa 1675.
The robust 38 and 1/2 inch diamond shaped blade with 8 inch deep fuller signed within “JOHANNES WUNDES”. Wundes is one of the genuinely legendary blade smiths and this blade is quite possibly an autograph work. The cup of classic Spanish ‘Bilbao’ style the cup face chiseled with acanthus leaves and stylized trophy of arms. The obverse plain.
The hilt with elaborate five ring design, D-guard and 11 and 1/2 inch long quillions. Waisted grip bound with copper wire and surmounted by two one piece steel “Turk’s Heads”. Beautiful disc shape pommel with chiseled rim.
The blade lightly patinated. The lovely hilt in fine condition throughout. The cup is chiseled rather than embossed. Almost 46 inches overall and perfectly balanced this is a very fine rapier.
