A Good U.S. Martial Model 1842 Percussion Musket By Springfield Armory Dated 1853. 42 inch round barrel .69 caliber dated 1848 on tang.
Though Springfield produced 172,000 of these many were shortened, modified, and cut down so full dimension exampled of this Civil War workhorse are relatively uncommon.
Overall condition is very good. The barrel smooth, deep even age brown. The lock with crisp markings and staining but no pitting.Steel furniture is deep age brown with no real pitting.
The stock has been cleaned long ago and retains most of two U.S. military inspector’s cartouches and is full dimension, not sanded. Trumpet ramrod appears original. The action is as crisp and strong on both half and full cock as it was when made at Springfield in 1853. The bore is excellent.
This is a very attractive Model 1842 Springfield musket.
