13 and 1/2 heavily swamped barrel octagonal at breech and struck with a mark. Plain steel lock with safety and internal wheel, beautifully filed cock spring. Early style cock with filed decoration.
Ebonized fruitwood full stock profusely inlaid throughout its length with engraved hop leaves in white stag horn , two royal faces behind breech tang, and elaborate stringing framing the entire design.
Mechanism untested. All internal parts present. Bore is good. “Squashed” ball pommel profusely inlaid with engraved white stag horn and expanded flower.
This is a true 16th century work of art wheellock pistol rarely seen outside major museums in America and Europe. Condition of steel surfaces is polished bright in the European museum manner. Almost all the inlays are original to the pistol and the condition of the scrimshaw decoration rates very fine. Stag horn tipped ramrod is short but appropriate to the pistol. 21 inches overall.
This wheelock is from a very old private collection and is “Fresh” to the market for the first time in half a century. Sure to delight the fortunate buyer of this lovely “puffer”.
