A Rare And Highly Desirable German Close Helmet Circa 1580 Deaccessioned By The Fine Arts Museum Of San Francisco (De Young Museum) A 309982.
6 pounds 10 ounces. Very well formed one piece skull with low roped comb. Interior shows 4 centuries of gentle aging and smooth hammer work. Exterior of skull exhibits proper delamination (exfoliation).
Vizor of excellent form with both circular and diagonal breaths. Eye slits are well cut and decorated with rope design en suite with skull. Bevor with boldly formed chin. Two neck lames with roped borders. Plume holder with slash decoration. Condition is fine and clean steel in the European museum manner.
This is a fine helm with a distinguished provenance (museum tag attached) and is far better than commonly encountered. The form as noted is particularly pleasing.
