A Very Fine Late 16th Century Italian Swept Hilt Rapier With Original Gilding and Period Elaborate Copper Wire Wrapped Grip.
The 39 inch fine rapier blade with narrow 8 inch fuller deeply stamped "Antonio" ?
Beautiful complex swept hilt with anneau, quillons, pas d’an, eccuson, and contra garde, all decorated en suite with fluted melons. Fluted pommel with gilding en suite. Luxurious and elaborate copper wire grip.
Condition of blade is good for the period with some ancient corrosion as expected.
Gilt hilt retains considerable period mercury gilding with some minor wear and one branch with a crack through it.
This lovely rapier has not been dismounted for more than a century and quite possibly never as ricasso and hilt meet up properly. 47 and 3/4 inches overall.
This is an elegant sword made for a late 16th century nobleman with taste.
