A Very Fine And Entirely Original Silver And Niello Mounted Of The Period Caucasian Shashka Circa 1890 In Its Original Scabbard.
30 inch long shashka blade with triple fullers and engraved with a “Sun in Splendor” on left side near forte and etched with a two inch panel of strapwork. The right side adorned with a finely engraved crescent man in the moon and the strap work en suite with the left.
This is a splendid example with classic hilt with luxurious silver and niello decoration comprising niello vines and tendrils on a silver pounced ground. Condition is wonderful with none of the usual dents. The silver and niello locket signed with three lines of niello calligraphy and silver hanging ring. 8 inch long silver and niello chape.
Middle mount of silver and niello. Condition of the mounts is exemplary with no dents or distortion. Original Morocco leather covered wood scabbard in very fine condition bound with twisted silver wire. 37 inches overall.
Most shashka that are offered are contemporary copies, many aged to resemble genuine antiques. This shashka is as stated genuine and of the period, likely the prized possession of a Cossack or Russian warrior. Do not pass on this opportunity to acquire an authentic work of art in silver and niello.
