An Iron Barrel English Flintlock Blunderbuss Or Coach Gun Circa 1800 With Owner’s Name On Brass Side Nail Escutcheon.
13 inch barrel. 1 inch bore. Barrel patinated with Birmingham proofs. Flat lock with stepped tail. Bridled frizzen but no roller. Brass furniture with good triggerguard with pineapple finial. Engraved brass buttplate.
Walnut full stock checkered at wrist. 8 inches of fore-end expertly restored. Stock with wear to checkering. Horn tipped ramrod replaced.
The intriguing thing about this short and handy flintlock gun is the period owner’s name “Jn Onions”. A John Onion (s) the Elder was convicted at the Leicester Assizes on April 18th 1818 and sentenced to life imprisonment. John was transported at Australia aboard the Isabella on July 22nd of 1818. Further research may prove most rewarding.
