An Excellent Martially Marked Civil War Rogers And Spencer Army Model Revolver Serial Number 4771.
7 and 1/2 inch barrel. .44 caliber. Most of the 5000 made of this popular Civil War revolver were purchased by Francis Bannerman in 1901. Few if any were issued as the initial delivery of 1500 coincided with Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in April of the same year.
Condition of this Rogers and Spencer is remarkable and far better than the ones commonly encountered. The barrel retains 85%+ deep lustrous original blue finish with flaking on the top flat only. The frame, backstrap and triggerguard have nearly 100% of their beautiful inky blue finish.
The cylinder which is usually found with considerable flaking still has 90% inky blue with only one very minor flaked spot about half the size of a dime. Nipples are mint. The tracking line is nearly invisible. Loading lever and hammer show 95% darkened casehardening. The trigger has 99% bright polish.
Grips with perfect RPB inspector’s cartouche for Captain Robert Peale Barry are very fine with one small area of chipping on both right and left panel. The action is like new as is the bore.
This gun is unfired and nearly perfect. It would be difficult to upgrade. A “No Apology” Rogers and Spencer.
