A Good 17th/18th Century German Sword Of Justice (Executioner’s Sword). 33 and 1/2 inch heavy spatulate blade with short, wide fuller measures 2 and 1/8th inches wide at forte.

The blade is etched on each side with a well executed standing figure of Justice holding a sword upraised in the left hand and the scales of justice on the left. Surmounted by a Maltese cross on each side. One side deeply struck with an armourer’s mark. The blade is in excellent condition overall with expected wear to etching from careful maintenance over the centuries. Bronze cross guard with lovely old unpolished patination.

Waisted wood grip bound tightly with twisted copper wire with braided copper “Turk’s” heads. Faceted urn shaped pommel. The hilt in very fine condition throughout. This rare and desirable sword has never been dismounted and remains very tight. The weight is 4 pounds and 4 ounces. Sword is 42 and 3/4 inches overall.

Swords of Justice were used in German courts as symbolic of the power of life and death as well as actually being employed in beheading. This is a fine example in wonderful condition.
