A Fine All Original Classic Italian Swept Hilt Rapier Circa 1600.
39 inch stout diamond shaped blade with six flats and deeply carved 8 and 1.4 inch single fullers. Signed in the fullers “HORTUNO A TORINO (Turin)”. Deeply struck with the blade smith’s mark in a cartouche “H”. The steel hilt with recurved quillons and large ring.
The grip masterfully bound with braided steel wire in a spirally fluted pattern. Steel “Turk’s Heads” at either terminal of grip, Large plain domed pommel. Condition of blade, hilt and pommel very lightly pitted overall as expected in a 400+ year old sword.
All elements appear to be homogenous and sword likely has never been dismounted. This rapier has really classic Renaissance form and is tight. 47 and 1/2 inches overall.
An outstanding example of the classic Renaissance nobleman’s weapon of choice when out and about.
