A Very Fine and Fully Decorated Signed Japanese Matchlock Temple Cannon (tanegashima) circa 1825. Property of the Daimyo of Yamato Province.

Weighing 15 pounds four ounces this cannon is a work of art. 27 inch barrel. The faceted cannon muzzle is 1 and 1/2 inches across and 75 caliber. The barrel is finely damascened throughout its length with a coiling dragon in silver and gold amidst clouds.

The breech is 2 inches across and decorated with three kanji and a large inlaid character. The iron match is damascened with silver. Plain brass lock plate and fence. Beautifully molded red oak full stock.

Cannon is 42.5 inches overall. Condition of barrel is excellent with light wear to damascening mostly at breech. Serpent will not hold on cock. Red oak stock is fine with some wear to extreme butt.

An extremely handsome cannon that will surely be a feature in any collectors gunroom or Japanese aficionados office. Very impressive!
