A Fine, Large And Rare True Pair Of Philadelphia Derringers By Henry Deringer Circa 1850 With Capboxes And Rifled Barrels.
3 inch barrels. 50 caliber. Pairs of genuine Henry Deringer derringers are very difficult to find. This pair has everything the advanced collector could want in a genuine pair by Henry himself. The round barrels with top flat stamped at breech “Deringer Philadela (sic)”.
The two characteristic German silver bands are present as well as the all important mark of a genuine derringer, the deeply struck “P” surrounded by a sunburst. The locks are engraved with Deringer’s floral scrolls and stamped “Deringer Philadela (sic)”. Full engraved German silver mounts including the Deringer ‘pineapple’ wedge escutcheons, triggerguard, nose cap, sideplate and shield shaped thumb piece. Steel cap boxes engraved with a pineapple.
Finely checkered walnut 3/4 stocks. Barrels with old period brown showing little wear with great breech stampings. Locks and engraved hammers with deep even age brown showing no wear with extremely crisp engraving. All German silver mounts with very crisp engraving. Fine walnut stocks retain 90%+ of what appears to be original varnish with crisp checkering. Ramrods of oak fit well but are later. Actions are both excellent on both half and full cock.
These are real beauties at 7 and 1/4 inches overall and have particularly elegant form. They fit the hand perfectly and feature cap boxes. One hammer with stress crack from age but not through.
