A Genuine Spanish Sail Guard Left Hand Dagger “Main Gauche” Circa 1735.
16 and 1/4 inch narrow diamond shaped blade with long narrow central fuller swelling at ricasso with decorative recessed thumb rest. Classic Spanish “sail’ guard showing fine age exfoliation with 11 and 1/2 inch quillons finely forged. Steel wire bound grip with four steel straps in the style of a Spanish Bilbao rapier. Disk pommel with slash decoration.
The blade with medium pitting at point and lightly pitted at ricasso, showing great age. The “sail” guard showing great age both outside and particularly inside.
Grip is excellent. Pommel is fine.
This is a genuine 18th century Spanish dagger that could well have been by the side of a Spanish grandee in colonial Spanish America. It is a tight and right overall.
