A Rare Factory Or New York Engraved Early Model Merwin & Hulbert Pocket Army Revolver Circa 1885 Serial Number 1706. 4 and 1/2 inch barrel. 44-40 caliber (Caliber Winchester 1873 marked on right side of frame).

The revolver is finely scroll engraved on frame, barrel, and cylinder accentuated with punch dots and flourishes. A beautiful sunburst characteristic of the L.D. Nimschke school of New York engraving appears on the saddle of the backstrap.

This revolver bespeaks the American West. Merwin Hulbert and Company were dealers and great promoters since 1869 but in 1876 Joseph Merwin began manufacture of their unique line of revolvers in the Hopkins and Allen plant in Norwich, Connecticut. Unfortunately Joseph Merwin died while on a promotional tour in 1879. Merwin and Hulbert revolvers are of the finest quality featuring automatic shell extraction.

This Pocket Army has been re-nickled long ago and this has filled some of the beautiful period engraving but the engraving is still fairly clear. The action needs minor attention but the revolver cocks. The pearl grips are original to the revolver and in fine condition. The bore is fair.

This Merwin would make a great addition to any Western gun collection and possesses that elusive quality known as “eye appeal” in spades.
