A Fine And Massive Pair Of French Percussion Rifled “Manstopper” Officer’s Pistols By Jean A Toulon (Hyacinthe Joseph Marie 1778-1841).
6 and 7/8 inch barrels. 70 caliber deep multi groove rifled barrels. Plain octagonal barrels retain 90% original fading Damascus brown. Finely engraved patent breeches and tang. Scroll engraved bolted front action locks signed “Jean a Toulon”. Hammers engraved en suite with engraved hammer screws. Engraved steel buttcaps with lanyard dings. Stirrup rammers. Engraved steel trigger guards with pineapple finials. Engraved steel fore-end caps.
Highly figured walnut half stocks with finely checkered butts. Locks are stained with no pitting and crisp engraving. Actions are excellent as are rifled bores.
This is a truly handsome and massive pair made for a French officer. Joseph Jean was a student of the most renowned of all 19th century gunmakers, Nicholas Noel Boutet, and worked at the Manufacture de Versailles until 1807 when he opened his shop in Toulon at 46 rue d’Alger.
