A Very Fine Civil War Issued Lindsay Model 1863 U.S. Double Percussion Rifle Musket, 1 of 1000 Made 1863-1864.
41 and 1/8th inch barrel. 58 caliber. An extremely fine example with some “Arsenal Bright” on barrel, uncleaned with staining but no pitting. Could be made nearly as issued if desired. Both hammers of this unique superimposed load martial musket have much original “Arsenal Bright”. Both nipples have original blue. Buttplate and barrel bands have staining but no pitting. Two leaf rear sight with original finish.
Dark walnut stock has super desirable “raised grain” excellent figure and two very crisp legible U.S. military inspector’s cartouches. “ADK” and “ADK”. With only a few very minor marks the stock rates excellent plus. Most Lindsay’s have stress cracks in their stocks particularly behind the action. This Lindsay’s stock is totally as issued. Original ramrod.
The action is as new, perfect in every respect. The bore is mint and possibly test fired only. Markings are fine. There are six small dents on the reinforced breech.
The first superimposed load U.S. martial long arm since the Ellis-Jennings sliding lock flintlock of 1829. Union troops did not like their Lindsay’s as they frequently fired both charges simultaneously resulting in cracked stocks, bruised cheekbones, and other undesirable consequences. This is a really fine example of one of the Civil War’s most unique shoulder weapons. Do not miss out on this one!
