A Lovely Cased Pair Of British Brass Barrel Turnoff Flintlock Boxlock Traveling Pistols By Bunney (Joseph Bunney 1766-1825) Circa 1775.
5 and 1/8th inch round barrels with three turnings and cannon muzzles. Birmingham gunmaker’s proofs on underside of breech. Engraved brass frames with “Bunney” in an oval reserve on left side and “London” in a reserve on right. Line engraved double neck cocks and frizzens. Steel trigger guards engraved with a blossom. Figured walnut slab side grips profusely inlaid with lovely sprays of silver wire in excellent condition. Engraved silver thumb pieces engraved with entwined owners initials “EHL”.
Pistols are cased in a period French case of the very highest quality by Luer a Paris with German silver corners, escutcheon, and strapping. Fine red felt lining in excellent condition. Accessories comprise a wood ramrod with brass tip and a lovely diminutive flask in fine condition with no dents and most all original finish (missing nozzle).
The key operates the four bolts perfectly. The pistols are finely fitted to the case. The actions function crisply on half and full cock. Bores are good. Condition is good with minor expected wear to engraving.
These fine pistols by one of England’s well known quality makers are 12 and 1/8th inches overall. The silver wire work is all intact and most attractive. This set will appeal to anyone who would like a very handsome and showy creed pair of 18th century English flintlock pistols.
