A Good Full Silver Mounted Georgian English Officer’s Pistol By W. (William) Arden Circa 1775. 8 and 3/4 inch three stage round barrel. 64 caliber. Stockel lists a Richard Arden working in Birmingham at 4 Constitutional Hill. This pistol is earlier and possibly by Richard’s father.
Barrel with proofs and engraved at breech with a trophy of arms, swamped muzzle and engraved breech tang with sighting groove. Convex lock with push on safety border tooth engraving and flourish at tail of lock. Signed “W Arden” in a scroll. Gooseneck cock engraved ensuite. Frizzen with border engraving ensuite with lock. Full silver mounts comprising engraved triggerguard with floral finial, sideplate with a castle and elaborate trophy of arms. Turned silver ramrod pipes. Grotesque mask butt and Roman helmet surmounted thumb piece. Original brass tipped ramrod.
Highly figured walnut full stock with shell carving behind breech. Condition of barrel smooth age brown with extremely minor pitting. Lock is clean with sharp engraving. Hammer engraving with some wear. Silver mounts are crisp throughout with little wear and sharp detail. Figured walnut full stock is fine with minor marks. Action is excellent, push on safety functions properly. Bore is good.
This is a handsome silver mounted English flintlock pistol that could have been carried by an officer with taste in the Revolutionary War. 14 and 1/2 inches overall.
