A Very Fine Massive Silver Gilt and Red Coral Mounted Ottoman Yataghan Circa 1820.
The 22 and 1/2 inch Yataghan blade is 1 and 1/2 inches wide at the hilt and inlaid on both sides with silver flowers and Arabic calligraphy. The Elaborate silver gilt hilt is decorated with 15 bezel set red corals surrounded by splendid silver beading. The original leather scabbard retains its original silver chape and locket engraved throughout with flowers Ottoman motifs including the Seal of Solomon (Suleiman) the chape ending in a dragon cast and chased in the round.
Condition of the blade is good overall with silver inlay intact on gray steel. The hilt is simply magnificent retaining much original bright gilding showing little wear and no damage. The scabbard has its original black leather and the silver mounts are fine with minor marks expected in genuine period silver mounted swords. The blade fits well in the scabbard.
This is a true 7 on a scale of 10; 10 being the Yataghans of Suleiman the Magnificent in the Topkapi Museum. A great Ottoman sword.
