A Remarkable High Art German Wheelock Sporting Gun Comprehensively Circa 1700 With Profusely Inlaid Fruitwood Full Stock. 32 and 3/4 inch .60 caliber swamped octagonal barrel with front and rear sight the left flat of breech deeply struck with a lion rampant. The barrel lightly patinated. 

The flat lock with internal wheel engraved with florals and a standing bear with whimsical expression as though expecting to be shot. Maker’s initials “ER”. The hammer with engraved plate worn. The lock engraving crisp, Shaped black horn escutcheons hold the two side nails.

The stock profusely inlaid throughout its length with dogs chasing rabbits along the fore-end and the butt in scrimshawed white stag horn. The right side of the butt inlaid with a Medieval castle and a hunter carrying a hare over his shoulder on a rod. The underside inlaid with a stag. The cheekpiece inlaid with a cavalier on horseback holding a long lance about to enter a forest with his hounds in pursuit of a fierce boar at bay being harried by a dog on its back. Original patchbox inlaid with white stag horn and black horn accents.

Steel triggerguard with finger rests with repair at front. Set trigger needs adjustment. The stock inlay is of excellent quality and though profuse remains in exceptionally fine condition with no losses and little or no wear.

Bore is fair. Mechanism untested but lock has all correct internal parts including chain. This wheelock is a true work of art sure to enhance any gun lover’s collection and at a very modest cost.
