A Very Fine Early 18th Century German Wheelock Sporting Rifle By The Renowned Gunmaker Balthasar Zellner (1703-1754) In Remarkable Original Condition.
28 and 1/2 inch swamped, deeply rifled octagonal barrel finely signed “BALTHASAR ZELNER” beautifully engraved at breech. Deeply sunken Zellner poincon in relief brass.
Muzzle with brass fore-sight. Rear sight missing. Barrel retains 80%+ original blue. Lockplate finely engraved with scrolls signed “B.Z.". Hammer is finely engraved overall. Condition with light staining but minty with no wear whatsoever.
Figured carved walnut full stock with beautiful horn trimmed patchbox, ramrod, front and rear ramrod pipes. Brass finger rest triggerguard. Plain brass sideplate.
Set trigger operates properly. Bore is excellent. The interior of the lock is mint and beautifully engraved spring and screws. Zellner is one of the most distinguished makers of the early 18th century and this fine wheelock exemplifies why his reputation is justified.
