This is a Magnificent Late Edo O Tanto Mounted in Splendid Heavily Gilded and Pierced Koshirae, with Superb Kogarasu Maru 13 and 1/2 inch Shin Shinto Date.
The blade with masterful hi as finely cut as any we have seen. The exuberant choji midare hamon is reminiscent of Awataguchi Tadatsuna.
The nakago is ubu with one mekugi ana with kuru jiri, three character indecipherable signature and date with fine silver wrapped habaki.
Full elaborate mounts comprising fuchi-kashira, kozuka kogai, koiguchi, kurikata, and kojiri all en suite pierced and chased with peonies, leaves, and gamboling shi shi in gilded silver. Large gilded shi shi menuki.
The gilded silver tsuba of lobed form and gilded castellated seppa.
Condition of blade is slightly stained with no kizu whatsoever and clearly visible hamon.
Nakago is perfect with fine calligraphy and excellent yasurimei. The ribbed wood saya in excellent condition and all the mounts exhibit little wear and appear to be solid gold, so heavy is the gold overlay.
23 inches overall. For quality and opulence this o tanto would be nearly impossible to surpass.
