A Scarce Pair Of Spanish Miquelet Officer’s Pistols By Villardel Empire Period (1800-1815) With Silver Inlaid Barrels By Chamas.
7 and 1/4 inch “Spanish” form barrels. .65 caliber. The barrels with extensive silver inlaid to form flowers and a cross. Silver poincon barrel maker’s mark, wedding ring muzzles and engraved barrel tangs.
Miquelet locks are elaborately and finely engraved signed “Villardel”. Triggerguards in the French Empire style with urn finial. Steel buttcaps in the French manner reminiscent of French officer’s pistols by LePage, Boutet, Pirmet and others.
Figured walnut fullstocks in the French manner with Empire butts finely checkered. Steel side plates with sparse engraving. Well formed steel ramrods.
Pistols are polished in the European Museum manner and engraving is sharp. Actions are very strong as mainsprings on miquelet guns are extremely thick. Stocks are crisp and retain what appears to be considerable original varnish. From 1808 to 1813 Napoleon’s brother Joseph was King of Spain and the Empire style was fashionable among Spanish gunmakers. Bores are good.
This is a very attractive pair.
