A Truly Splendid High Art Profusely Inlaid Mid 17th Century Saxon Miner’s Axe Dated 1657.

25 and 3/4 inch walnut haft inlaid throughout its length with finely scrimshawed panels depicting Jesus on the Cross, Ottoman noblemen, kings, blossoms, the panels elegantly framed by stag horn pellets.

The large base very finely scrimshawed with a crowned king richly clothed astride a rearing destrier and the other side with low German inscription “Einna Zudern andern sagget shau de dmich de sud loberstnt” and date 1657.

The axe head of typical miner’s axe form with high spike and pierced cross. These lovely axes were carried in procession on feast and holy days by the Saxon Miner’s guild and are of varying qualities. The present example is of the very best quality and must have belonged to a highly placed functionary in the guild. The condition is extraordinary with the scrimshaw brilliant and not a single inlay large or small replaced.

The axe head with some age related wear but fine. This lovely axe is also unusually large 32 and 1/2 inches overall.
