A Splendid Pair Of Exceptionally Long Liegeois Flintlock Holster Pistols By Henri Devillers At The Sign Of The Blue Lion (Enseigne du Lion Bleu) Circa 1736.
14 and 1/4 inch long round steel barrels with well executed top flats. Deviller’s deeply stamped mark of a horn suspended from a loop at the breech. The tangs are covered by finely engraved brass strips decorated with florals. The barrel with long raised brass sights. Single bolted early banana shaped locks with border engraving signed “DEVILLERS”.
Faceted pans, swan neck cocks engraved ensuite with the plates. Finely molded frizzens. Full brass mounts comprising finely turned ramrod pipes. Trigger guards with acanthus finials. Elegant pierced large sideplates with a monster spewing the foliate design from one of the great pattern books like Berain, large supered buttcaps with grotesque mask “skull crusher” pommels.
Beautifully molded fine walnut full stocks. Both pistols retain original brass tipped ramrods. The condition overall rates excellent for a pair of 300 year old pistols and the wood is superbly patinated and shows remarkably little wear and both stocks are undamaged with none of the usual fore-end additions.
The actions are excellent and the bores are good. All lock parts are original as are the early style hammer screws. Pairs of long early flintlock pistols are almost impossible to find in this original condition.
These are massive, measuring a full 21 and 1/2 inches overall. A wonderful addition to any collection of Continental flintlock pistols. Do not hesitate on these beauties.
