A Highly Desirable And Genuine Napoleonic Period Deluxe General’s Pattern Saber In Its Original Repousse And Gilt Brass Scabbard.
32 inch curved saber blade with broad single fuller on both sides and engraved with blossoms, trophy of arms and a sun in splendor within a reserve. Gilt brass hilt with D-guard and standing Roman hero in relief on each langet. Knuckleguard with trophy of arms in relief. Well defined lion head pommel. Very finely checkered, polished exotic wood grip. The hilt with some original gilding and little wear. The grip is excellent.
The blade with clear engraving and mostly gray steel with clip point and no pitting. The blade retains its still keen and not resharpened edge. The brass scabbard with three panels in high relief, the one with magnificent trophy of arms, the middle panel with relief of a Roman goddess and the one near the chape of a Roman goddess holding a wreath of victory aloft in her right hand. The scabbard in good condition with some original bright mercury gilding and only a few very minor dents.
Given that most deluxe Napoleinic sabers one sees are excellent aged reproductions often made in France, to find an original example is quite a challenge. Good copies have been made since the mid-20th century and were part of the legendary Bremner Hogg Jackson Collection donated to the Smithsonian Institution and later deaccessioned and auctioned at Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco. This sword is genuine and of the Napoleonic period.
