A Good And Well Marked British “Brown Bess” Pattern 1809 Also Known As An “India Pattern” For Its Double Necked Cock.
39 inch round barrel. .75 caliber. The barrel with most attractive deep even age brown patina and the usual viewed and proofed stamps at breech. The double bolted lock of standard pattern stamped with the “Crown over GR” and “TOWER” at the tail. Lock is patinated with clear markings and all original small parts including top jaw and screw.
Brass mounts of British regulation pattern. Good walnut fullstock stamped with “WP” inspector opposite lock. Comb is still high and has not been reduced. The walnut with lovely hand work patina throughout and much original varnish. Two very minor losses forward of lock leading into a tight crack which does not detract. Steel ramrod in of the period but not regulation.
A fine example of a Napoleonic Brown Bess that may well have assisted in the defeat of the “Grand Army” and the Emperor’s dream of European domination. The action is good as is the bore. Looks untouched.
