An Extraordinarily Long And Unusually Elegant Northern French Wheel-lock Holster Pistol Circa 1580 Maker’s Mark “R”.
23 and 1/4 inch octagonal smoothbore barrel with classic French ring at muzzle and lovely turned high raised breech struck with a maker’s mark “R” in a rectangle. The lock of excellent quality with barred external wheel and urn decoration. Finely filed dog spring. The dog itself is beautifully rounded.
The trigger with unusual return spring affixed to the elegant steel triggerguard. Triple side nails secure the fine lock.
Superb fruitwood fullstock with lovely fluted diminutive pear shape pommel finely carved with a recessed flower. Steel tipped ramrod held by two steel ramrod pipes.
The bore is excellent. The beauty and elegance of this wheel-lock pistol as well as its 32 and 3/4 inch length and overall excellent condition places it far above the commonly seen pistol of this period.
Fresh from a private collection and unpublished, this pistol is a wheel-lock collectors dream.
