A Rare And Unusually Massive Dumonthier Double Barrel Percussion Knife Pistol Circa 1855.
Massive 13 and 3/4 inch double edged blade is 1 and 3/4 inches wide at forte. The single fullers are relieved to accommodate the barrels. 3 and 3/4 inch round Damascus barrels. 36 caliber.
Designed by Joseph-Celestin Dumonthier in Paris. A unique design patterned after 16th century wheellock sword pistols in which the guard serves as the hammers. Folding triggers like those of Paterson Colts. Fine wood grips are decorated with a spiral fluted pattern.
Original leather scabbard with silver chape and locket. The leather with original black finish and minor flaking. The pistol in very fine condition with original bright polished spear point blade. The barrels with fine Damascus pattern. The frame patinated with age but no pitting. The action very tight. Bores are good.
At 19 and 1/2 inches overall out of its scabbard this huge Dumonthier can almost be called a sword pistol. A must for the lover of firearms oddities and this one is IMPRESSIVE!
