An Unusually Fine Indian Talwar With Finely Silver Damascened Hilt And Exceptional Relief Chiseled Damascus Blade Deeply Relief Chiseled Maker’s Mark Within An Engraved Bottle Circa 1835.
The 31 inch long blade is 1 and 5/8th inches wide at forte. The left adorned with a relief chiseled panel of sprays of flowers in addition to the maker’s mark. The right decorated with an 8 inch long panel divided into a 4 and 3/4 inch panel of relief chiseled calligraphy topped with an engraved crescent moon and star and the lower panel ensuite with the left one.
The spine with an 8 and 1/2 inch panel of leafy meander. The classic talwar hilt entirely covered in thick relief silver with foliate decoration on a pounced ground. The blade with 12 and 1/2 inch clip point is of fine Damascus steel.
The whole sword in very fine condition throughout. Leather covered wood scabbard is in very good overall condition. A truly exceptional talwar that once translated may prove of even greater significance than the work of the swordmaker’s art it is.
