A Very Rare All Steel French Combination Mace And Retractable Dagger Circa 1600.

27 and 1/2 inches overall including 2 and 3/4 inches of the diamond shape 4 sided dagger protruding from the coronet of the mace itself. The daggers a full 10 and 1/4 inches overall when extended.

The butt of the mace is formed as a fleur de lis. The hollow haft is octagonal and one flat is pierced to reveal the round shaft of the dagger blade. A finely filed steel mount is pierced for a thong enabling the mace to be carried as is the case with most all period maces. The mace head is spirally fluted and expands toward the crest.

Most importantly the head is secured to to the shaft with copper brazing which is indicative of armorer’s techniques during the Renaissance. The condition overall is very fine with no corrosion and the quality is excellent. The fierce dagger blade retracts and extends smoothly as befits a genuine combination weapon.

This rare mace is similar to brandistocks only more interesting.
