A Very Scarce U.S. Model 1833 Officer’s Private Purchase Heavy Dragoon Saber with 36 inch finely etched blade by Horstmann & Sons.
The pipe back blade is 1 and 1/8th inch wide at ricasso with 11 inch spear point. The etching covers 2/3rds of the blade and is of exceptional quality; the right side with foliage, a “US” shield, Fierce national eagle with ‘E Pluribus Unum” in riband and a field tent flying the flag. The left side with national eagle, stars, and “E Pluribus Unum” in riband, surmounting a Native American in full dress with tomahawk raised aloft in his right hand and a bow in his left.
Steel hilt of regulation form and fish skin grip bound with twisted double strand copper wire. Regulation steel scabbard with two carrying rings.
The condition is fine throughout particularly the etching on the blade which shows little if any wear and some original bright polish. Fishskin grip with only very minor wear. The original scabbard is slightly stained but exhibits no pitting and none of the usual door pinches.
A truly splendid and rare U.S. Heavy Dragoon saber that would be difficult to upgrade.
