A Very Rare And Truly Massive Full Silver Mounted Ottoman Yataghan With Damascus Blade Circa 1800.
The 23 inch heavy yataghan blade struck with an Ottoman maker’s mark who invariably made Damascus blades and this one is no exception to the rule. The blade has been etched to reveal the pattern of the Damascus steel and is easily visible along the edge. Further professional etching would doubtless reveal an outstanding pattern throughout. 3 and 3/4 inch foliate engraved silver panels adorn the ricasso.
This yataghan’s hilt is silver with relief chased and cast blossoms and vases. The 25 and 5/8th inch long silver scabbard features repousse in high relief with trophies of arms, mosques all in panels with guilloche borders. The scabbard in fine condition with no dents, separations, or cracks (uncommon). The hilt is in like condition.
At 30 and 1/2 inches overall this lovely yataghan would be a stand out in any collection of Islamic arms and armour.
