A Scarce and Desirable German/Swiss Dog Head Pommel Saber Circa 1640. 

The broad 31 and 1/2 inch blade with flat spine engraved with Solingen running wolf and struck with cabalistic marks to protect the wearer during battle.

Blade is 1 and 1/8th inch wide at ricasso with a long single fuller extending to within 8 inches of point.

Steel guard with finger loop and embossed brass plate decorated with florals. Twisted brass wire bound grip with brass caps. Heavy brass pommel cast and chased as a dog’s head.

Condition of blade is good with some staining and clear running wolf on both sides. Hilt is good as is grip and pommel.

Sword is very tight and appears homogenous.

A scarce and sought after type of sword.
