A Magnificent And Massive Federal Period Eagle Head Officer’s Saber Circa 1815 With Splendid Blued And Gilt Etched Blade.
29 and 3/8th inch long blade. A full 1 and 3/8th inches wide at forte. The blade is simply lovely and shows all its bright original polish. The right side with three large blue and gilt panels, the top with a gilt flourish of foliage against a brightly blued ground. The center panel features a beautiful American eagle with a fierce expression holding a riband with “E Pluribus Unum” in its beak all on a niter blue ground. The forte panel shows a Phrygian Liberty Cap above oak leaves on a bright blue ground. The left side with three further panels the middle panel with a trophy of arms. Each side shows two large finely etched panels of sprays of foliage.
The beauty and condition of the blade sets it apart from most all eagle head sabers and places it among the very finest examples. The large gilt langlets are cast and chased in relief with a winged female bust possibly Medusa. The cross guard features a wolf’s head in the round. The knucklegiard as acanthus leaves. The internal pommel with a superb eagle head cast and chased in relief, the feathers well defines. The hilt with considerable original bright fire gilding. The grip of natural material with one minor loss bound with triple strand twisted copper wire.
This wonderful sword retains its superb original scabbard with no appreciable dents and 90% of its original bright gilding. A cut far above any eagle head we have seen in a long time and among the finest examples extant.
