A Very Interesting Civil War Period Cavalry Saber With Splendid Etched Blade By Horstman Philadelphia Circa 1864 In Scabbard.
34 and 1/2 inch blade with one broad fuller below one narrow fuller. The right side etched with “E Pluribus Unum” a proud American Eagle and a large trophy of arms. The left side etched with classic foliage and very large “US”. Good frosted panel proudly etched “W HORSTMAN & SONS PHILADELPHIA”. King’s head stamp near leather washer. All etching is crisp and apart from minor freckling and staining, is brilliant.
The Civil War officer’s style hilt retains some gilding and is cast with the usual acanthus foliage. Elegant unwrapped horn grip in fine condition. The pommel decorated ensuite. Steel scabbard in good overall condition with no door dents.
A very attractive and unusual Horstman Civil War period saber.
