An Absolutely Wonderful Royal Guard Caribe (Bilbao) Hilt Broadsword For Portuguese Queen Dona Maria (1777-1816).
36 and 3/8th inch diamond shape blade with 11 and 1/4 inch narrow triple fullers and finely engraved panel with “IHS” motto. Large and finely executed shaded capital letters “DONA MARIA” celebrating Portugal’s beloved “Mad Queen”.
A true broadsword measuring 1 and 3/8th inches across the ricasso. Blade and all engraving in fine untouched condition. Classic Bilbao hilt with quillions 11 and 1/4 inches across compliment the long broadsword blade. Fine grip wrapped with twisted copper wire in four sections in the characteristic Caribe manner. Steel “Turk’s Heads”. Original onion shaped pommel.
Condition of hilt and grip is fine. This superb broadsword is 44 inches overall. Portuguese swords are rare to begin with and one associated with Queen Dona Maria is a rare and possibly unique find.
