A Rare 18th Century Ottoman Kalkan “Buckler” Of Wood, Cord, And Iron Circa 1765.
11 inches in diameter. Identical Ottoman bucklers appear as Figure 94 in ISLAMIC WEAPONS by Anthony C. Siri.
Condition of the iron is heavily patinated. The central boss with triangular spike the outer iron rim attached with numerous iron bars filed with upward pointing arrow design (one bar absent). The colorful wool cloth is deteriorated and the wood strips are held by iron staples. The interior with some color remaining to the wool.
This is a rare and 100% genuine Ottoman buckler that was taken out of Turkey by legendary arms collector and dealer Martin B. Retting in the early 1960’s and locked away until this year.
