A Splendid And Very Rare Gilt Silver Covered Wood Stocked Ottoman Flintlock Horseman’s Blunderbuss Of The Bodyguard Of Turkish Sultan Mahmud II Circa 1810-1820.
20 inch round barrel with 1 and 1/2 inch bell muzzle. The barrels overlaid throughout its entire length with heavy relief silver Arabesques, the breech tang overlaid ensuite. The burnished stepped and bolted lock with roller bearing frizzen and rainproof pan engraved “IONDON (sic) WARANTED (sic).
Elaborate steel iron bar saddle ring for carrying on a horse also serves as sideplate. The full stock entirely encased in gilded silver panels repousse with flowers, rose bouquets, and fluted scrolls, the barrel band, triggerguard, and false ramrod all ensuite.
A work of art in every respect as well as a highly important historical artifact. The whole in fine original condition throughout. The action is excellent as is the bore.
A similar Mahmud II blunderbuss is on exhibit at the Wallace Collection, London and another was sold at Christie’s, London 30 November 2009 for 43,250 Great British Pounds.
