A Good And Classic Brass Barrel British Flintlock Blunderbuss By Henshaw (William 1762-1805) London, 181 Strand Circa 1770.
18 and 3/4 inch barrel with pronounced ‘bell’ muzzle. 1 and 1/8th inch diameter bore at muzzle. Two gunmaker’s proofs and Henshaw’s personal proof under crown. Four section barrel. Plain bolted lock signed “HENSHAW”. Bridled frizzen. Full plain brass mounts comprising side plate, thumb piece, triggerguard and early style nail fastened buttplate.
Highly figured molded walnut fullstock with beautiful grain and some “tiger” striping. Horn tipped ramrod, possibly the original. Condition is overall very good with excellent wood, patinated but not pitted lock and lovely brass barrel with little wear. This sturdy classic blunderbuss saw considerable careful use as the touch-hole has been bushed. The action is crisp on both half and full cock and the bore is fine.
Altogether an attractive example of this well known type, one of which was kept in many British homes throughout the kingdom.
