An Extremely Attractive And Very Scarce Luxurious Full Silver Mounted Louis XVI Double Barrel Flintlock Carriage Pistol, The Locks Signed “Manu Fre Royale” (Manufacture Royale) “De St Etienne” ( De Saint Etienne) Circa 1785.
8 and 1/2 inch finely formed “Spanish” form barrels, round to 16 sided to octagonal. .55 caliber.
The barrels gold decorated at breech (some loss to gilding), Gilt “Canon Tordu” on central rib. Silver fore-sight surrounded by gliding. Traces of original blue finish, Finely engraved convex locks. The hammers engraved ensuite and pierced. The bridled frizzens engraved with bombs and lines and further enhanced with beadwork. Full hallmarked silver mounts comprising triggerguard engraved with trophy of arms, hallmarked ramrod pipes. silver thumb piece, spurred silver buttcap engraved and cast chased with six stars and crescent moon.
Beautiful walnut fullstock carved in relief behind the breech and behind the rear ramrod pipe, the carving of unusually fine quality. Remarkably, this lovely pistol retains its original silver tipped ramrod with its worm.
The overall condition is fine, the locks polished bright, the silver mounts in good condition, the stock is fine with old coat of varnish. Locks with all original small parts including top jaws and screws. The actions on both locks are excellent with crisp functioning on both half and full cock. Bores rate excellent.
14 and 7/8th inches overall. This is a most attractive and unusually fine reminder of the luxury of the French Royal Court prior to the French Revolution.
