A Very Fine Quality Continental Chiseled Dish Hilt Transitional Rapier Circa 1645.
38 inch stout diamond shape blade with 8 inch long central fuller. The fuller with stamped inscription likely the blade smith and “IN SOLINGEN” (work). The lovely dish guard chiseled in relief with pellets and a design of strawberry blossoms in a swirl. The ricasso chiseled ensuite with the guard.
The double branch D guard hilt chiseled throughout with short quillions chiseled with pellets all ensuite. Elaborate twisted copper wire covered wood grip surmounted with extremely complex copper “Turk’s Heads”. Onion shaped pommel chiseled with pellets ensuite with the remainder of the hilt. The blade is patinated showing age. The hilt has a most attractive deep brown russet patination, absolutely untouched and tight. Grip is fine and original.
This lovely sword has never been dismounted and is one of the most impressive transitional rapiers we have had the pleasure of offering to our clients. 45 and 1/2 inches overall.
