A Rare And Unique Late 16th Early 17th Century Broadsword With Finely Engraved Hilt And Pommel Circa 1590-1610.
36 and 1/4 inch diamond shaped blade with central flat deeply stamped “SAB SAB”. One inch wide at forte. The hilt with recurved ring and downturned quillions all finely engraved with wriggle work. Spirally steel wire bound wood grip of elaborate pattern involving two kinds of wire surmounted by “Turk’s Heads”. Ovoid steel pommel with sectioned areas of engraved wrigglework ensuite with the hilt and quillions.
A beautiful sword that is homogenous, tight and has not been dismounted. Condition is good overall with clear markings and only minor wear to the engraving. 42 and 1/2 inches overall. With good balance this is a handsome sword.
