A Very Good Spanish Military Broadsword In Scabbard Ex: Martin B. Retting Personal Collection Circa 1785.
33 and 5/8th inch long blade with 8 inch single fuller with Catholic invocation within (illegible) and engraved on both sides with the “Running Wolf of Solingen”. A full 1 and 3/8th inches wide at forte.
Engraved Bilbao style shell guard. Classic Spanish Bilbao style quilllions and D-guard. Fluted wood grip bound with finely twisted steel wire surmounted with well executed writhen steel “Turk’s Heads”. Large squashed steel pommel.
In its original leather scabbard (fragile!) with steak locket and chape. Blade and quillon with period Spanish armourer’s repairs. Condition is fine overall.
Lead collection tag with “MBR” initials. Martin Retting was a renowned collector of arms and armour and the fact that he kept this sword in personal collection guarantees its excellence.
