A Particularly Handsome Homogenous Classic Continental Swept Hilt Rapier Circa 1610.
37 and 1/3 inch superbly forged six sided blade with central flat and 7 and 1/4 inch short fuller. The left fuller engraved with the motto “PRO CHRISTO ET PATRIA”. The right fuller engraved “AGUIR EN TOLEDO”. The blade smith’s stamp of an “H” in a square in ricasso.
Steel hilt of classic swept rapier form with finely pierced counter guard. Long spatulate quillions. Spiral wire bound grip with small “Turk’s Heads”. Shield shaped pommel original to this lovely rapier. This is a homogenous sword that has never been dismounted. Condition is fine throughout. 45 and 1/2 inches overall.
This is a lovely original sword that balances perfectly and was doubtless made for a very discerning gentleman in the beginning of the 17th century who insisted on a superior rapier.
