A “Very Rare Backwards Barrel Address Variation” Colt Single Action Army Revolver Serial Number 38939 For 1877.

7 and 1/4 inch round barrel (possibly Colt Factory?). Caliber .45 Long Colt. All matching serial numbers including barrel.

This particular fine Colt Single Action is an extremely rare example of the Colt Factory sending out revolvers which did not conform to their usual specifications in the interest of profitability. The barrel address reads from breech to muzzle rather than the customary muzzle to breech.

The Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia by Keith Cochran states: “This is a very rare variation. Seven Peacemakers have been observed with a backwards address." Serial numbers 37,395 and 39,968 were recorded therefore 38939 is between two known numbers.

The barrel with 50% old period blue finish. Period blued frame with 95% finish. Backstrap and triggerguard with much period blue finish. All markings extremely clear. One piece original walnut grips are slightly undersized but Colt penciled 9117 and retain nearly all their original varnish. The bore is fine and the action is excellent with all three clicks.

A must own variation for the advanced collector of the gun that “Won the West”.
